The Loyd Center - The living dead mall - The synthesizer library
in portland is a very special retail experience. - mostly void of any corporations, loyd center is a mall i actually want to go to...

On this day i was going to learn to build a synthesizer!
Excited and nervous, i made my way to the end of the mall where the synthesizer library class was already in session. Folding tables were set up in the middle of the library with soldering tools, a kit for each station and a exhaust fan. Its always difficult to sqash my desire to play with the synths at the library during a class. Pretty much anything you could want from a jd8000 to a rack of vintage electrical test oscilators (real ones will know what to do with those….)

I built a Bastl Kastl 2 which can be a multi fx unit or a sampler. Its a great instrument so far. I am using it on the fx send and returning into a channel on my dj mixer.
The tiny patch cables take time to get used to, but i have only scratched the surface on the places this thing can go.
There is currently a campaign to save the loyd center. Its a massive building and a historic testemant to the retail optimism of pre pandemic times. I hope the hardscrabble group of artists, shopkeeps, and mall enjoyers can convince the evil developers and city goverment to compromise on their yuppified visions.
