TECH TALK - bts - live in the bagoverse; a preview of whats to come and some help for those on the same path
talking midi, raspberry pi, the fediverse, substack vs ghost, and more
Last night i travelled to vancouver washington , which is just across the river from portland. I came home with my VERY OWN RASPBERRY PI 5!

Its next to me as i write this, fun colors coming thru its dual fans. The Person who sold it to me was using it for gaming. It has an os on it called luka.
My first attempt to open the computer via remote desktop immediately failed. it seems i must first open the pi via a screen in order to do initial setup, then i can remotely access it.
no biggie!
Things i hope i can learn with the pi
- basic network access storage setup
- basic server setup
- use of the program docker to partition apps on the device
- ssh and command line
- remote desktop
- pi-hole
- intalling different linux
- prototyping new technology for myself
- automating tasks in my life
- rudimentary ai assistant design
- media server

The pi is a single board computer. Above its setup in a desktop computer mode, but you can also embed it for a single use project.
heres a project building a smart mirror for example!
I am excited as this fits in perfectly with my current obsession;
THE FEDIVERSE
The Fediverse is interconnected social platform ecosystem based on an open protocol called ActivityPub (AP), which allows you to port your content, data, and follower graph between networks.
Just imagine if you took X, TikTok, Snapchat, Instagram, and Facebook and made them all interoperable so you could post anything from anywhere, and all your followers would be guaranteed to see it. And if you wanted to leave one platform for another, you could bring all your content, all your followers, everything with you.
Best of all: most of the Fediverse is non-commercial and not for profit (with the exception of Threads, which is part of the Fediverse) and nobody can “buy” the AP protocol.
My fediverse home is here on Mastodon.
I have succeeded at having a phone for about a month now without installing instagram on it. Its been difficult but the fediverse has helped. Once i realized the difference on my mental health between scrolling the two platforms, it gave me all the more resolve to stick the federated social media.
If you aren’t a tech geek, a server is where your website or web app lives. Instagram owns and controls all their servers, and as a result all user data. Mastodon is a federation of thousands of indiependent servers ran by people like me. These servers all have different rules, focuses, and technology powering them but they can all interconnect and be presented in one app timeline. I might follow people who are on hundreds of different servers but their posts show up on my timeline together without delay.
I WANT TO TRY HOSTING MY OWN FEDIVERSE SERVICES
I want to run ghost, mastodon, and pixelfed.
Ghost is very similar to Substack, but its open source and federated technology.
I spun up a version of what my website will look like on ghost.
Open source means the code itself is open to the public and community built as opposed to apps like Instagram which carry felony sentences if one were to tinker around inside.

Mastodon is like twitter and pixelfed is like instagram.
So far none of my friends are nerdy enough to sign up yet. INSTAGRAM IS MUCH SIMPLER AND MORE EXCITING.
Part of the excitement is lost without the algorithm pushing what it pushes, but that is because algorythmically distributed social media IS A DRUG that is formulated to keep your eyes on the screen as much as possible.
After a week on mastodon, i felt again like i was on soundcloud in 2010; exploring and connecting with strangers. Its a very welcoming space even tho there is a learning curve to get into it.
Thats all for today. Last night i dj a show at Azoth Space in portland and my back hurts so im going to get off the computer.
